A few months ago, I uploaded a 74-minute video called “Meet the Peanuts.” The video contained every introductory video with members of the South Georgia Peanuts.
Over the past few weeks, I’ve been cutting that larger video into smaller segments and putting the segments onto SouthGeorgiaPeanuts.net – a new website that will eventually contain hours of unreleased footage and behind-the-scenes commentary from the show.
Here are a few of the highlights from the videos that have been uploaded recently:
Meet the Peanuts – Curtis Goodwin
Curtis Goodwin was an MLB veteran who was in the Orioles lineup the night Cal Ripken broke the consecutive games played streak. Curtis suffered from a weird strain of camera shyness – he never wanted to do interviews, but he would jump in front of our cameras whenever he could – mostly during games or batting practice. I had to work extra hard to get Curtis to sit down for this interview and he didn’t disappoint.
Meet the Peanuts – Mike Caruso
Caruso was another former Major Leaguer. Drafted in the second round by the Giants in 1996, he was the key player traded from the Giants to the White Sox in the infamous “White Flag Trade.” After batting .306 and finishing third in the Rookie of the Year voting in 1998, Caruso quickly vanished from Major League baseball – bouncing around affiliated and independent leagues before leaving the game following the 2004 season. Meet the Peanuts – Chris Webb
Webb was a mid-season addition to the Peanuts pitching staff. Webb relied on a knuckleball and worked out of the bullpen and the starting rotation. This introductory interview is probably the best clubhouse interview that we did, from a production standpoint. If I remember correctly, we did this interview during the first game of a doubleheader at Paul Eames Sports Complex in Albany, GA. Click here for more info on Chris Webb.
Meet the Peanuts – Drew Shetrone
Shetrone was another mid-season addition to the Peanuts pitching staff. Shetrone was released by the Macon Music and he was picked up by Peanuts manager Wally Backman and he quickly became the team’s closer. Shetrone was an instrumental part of the Peanuts season and he has the distinction of being a key performer in the infamous Snake Prank (only available on the DVD – order it here). Shetrone was picked up by the Yankees in 2008 and pitched for the Staten Island Yankees of the New York-Penn League. Click here for more info on Drew Shetrone.
Meet the Peanuts – Dumas Garcia
Garcia had an outstanding season for the Peanuts, going 7-4 with a 3.44 ERA. He was picked up by the Cubs and he pitched at three levels of affiliated baseball in 2008 (A+, AA, AAA). Garcia was one of three players to reach the AAA level within a year of playing independent ball for the Peanuts – the others being Jerome Gamble (Braves) and Chris Demons (Blue Jays). To my knowledge, that has never been done before. This interview is more of a joke than anything – halfway through, the microphone died and I wasn’t wearing headphones so I had no idea until I tried to edit it months later.
